WebP for almost everything on the web — it is smaller than both JPEG and PNG and every current browser reads it. JPEG when something old needs to open it. PNG when you need transparency and cannot use WebP.
JPEG has none, so any transparent area is filled with the background colour you pick. Crop to a circle and export as JPEG and you get a circle on a solid square. Use WebP or PNG to keep the corners clear.
Yes. Orientation is read from the file itself, so a photo taken sideways comes out the right way up rather than lying on its side.
Large, but each image is decoded into memory to be processed, so a hundred 12-megapixel photos will make a low-end phone struggle. Twenty at a time is comfortable anywhere.
